DNS

Nameservers and DNS, without the folklore.

A domain only resolves if nameservers and records are set correctly. Steady shows the controls the registrar actually supports for your domain.

How it works

From nameservers to a live site

Nameservers

They tell the internet which DNS service answers for your domain. Change them in the portal when the registrar supports it.

Records

A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT records point the name at a site, a mailbox or a verification string.

Propagation

Changes are not instant. TTL and resolver caches mean some networks still see the old answer for a while.

Can I edit DNS records from Steady today?+

Nameserver changes are available in the portal for domains we manage. Full DNS-record editing depends on the registrar capability for that domain — the portal only shows controls that actually work.

How many nameservers can I set?+

Up to four, which is the registrar limit. Two is the usual minimum.

Do I need Steady hosting to use Steady DNS?+

No. You can point a Steady domain at any nameservers, including ones you run yourself.
